Unlocking Your Energy Centers: 7 Simple Steps To Open Chakras

Welcome to the “Unlocking Your Energy Centers: 7 Simple Steps To Open Chakras” blog.

In the quest for holistic well-being, the ancient practice of chakra balancing has gained significant attention. Rooted in the belief that our bodies are composed of energy centers or chakras, this practice seeks to ensure the smooth flow of vital energy.

One approach that has captured the interest of many spiritual seekers is the use of Bija mantras – sacred seed syllables associated with each chakra. In this blog post, we’ll explore the world of chakra balancing and opening through Bija mantras, delving into their origins, meanings, and how to incorporate them into your spiritual journey and practice.

Table of Contents

The term “chakra” comes from Sanskrit and translates to “wheel” or “disc.” Chakras are considered centers of energy within the human body, particularly in various spiritual and esoteric traditions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and certain forms of yoga.

Chakras are believed to be spinning wheels of energy aligned along the spine, each corresponding to different aspects of our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being and life experience. There are seven major chakras, from the root chakra at the base of the spine to the crown chakra at the top of the head. When these chakras are in balance, energy flows freely, promoting overall health and vitality.

Bija mantras are single-syllable sounds, often derived from the Sanskrit language, that are linked to each chakra. These primal sounds are thought to encapsulate the essence and vibration of their corresponding energy centers. The term “Bija” itself translates to “seed,” emphasizing the notion that these mantras are the seeds from which the chakras grow and flourish.

There are typically seven major chakras, each associated with specific qualities, aspects of human experience, and areas of the body. These chakras are believed to play a crucial role in maintaining physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual balance. Each chakra is linked to certain colors, elements, sounds, and even states of consciousness. That being said, some people believe you have over 100 different chakras in the body.

Here’s a brief overview of the seven major chakras:

What Are Chakras and Bija Mantras

The Seven Bija Mantras and Their Corresponding Chakras:

Root Chakra (Muladhara): The Bija mantra associated with the root chakra is “LAM.” It represents stability, grounding, and a connection to the physical world.

Sacral Chakra (Svadhishthana): The Bija mantra for the sacral chakra is “VAM.” It is connected to emotions, sensuality, and creativity.

Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura): The Bija mantra “RAM” is linked to the solar plexus chakra, which governs personal power, confidence, and transformation.

Heart Chakra (Anahata): The heart chakra’s Bija mantra is “YAM.” This sound resonates with love, compassion, and emotional balance.

Throat Chakra (Vishuddha): The Bija mantra “HAM” corresponds to the throat chakra and is related to self-expression, communication, and authenticity.

Third Eye Chakra (Ajna): The Bija mantra “OM” or “AUM” is associated with the third eye chakra. It represents intuition, insight, and spiritual awareness.

Crown Chakra (Sahasrara): The Bija mantra for the crown chakra is a unique silence, often symbolized as “NG” or “NN.” This chakra signifies transcendence, higher consciousness, and connection to the divine.

*Note* What I personally consider to be the eighth important Major Chakra is the “Zeal Chakra” (also called the “Mouth Of God, Bliss Chakra, Ascension Chakra or Alta Major”).

It is located in the back of the head, at the base of the skull. This Chakra is not mentioned often, but I have personally found it to be a really important one, especially if you are into magick, different healing & energy work, etc.

As a result, channeling your energy through Zeal Chakra and Anja Chakra (Third Eye) really enables you to push your Will and your intentions out into the Universe.

Balancing and Opening Chakras with Bija Mantras

The practice of balancing and opening chakras using Bija mantras involves focused meditation and sound repetition. Chanting Bija mantras is a quick yet powerful method to connect deeply to the vibrational energy of both our bodies and the universe.

When used properly, these sacred sounds can clear the mind, align us with cosmic energies, enhance our spiritual capabilities, and bring awareness to the present moment.

Here’s a simple 7 step guide to get you started:

1. Find a Quiet Space: Choose a quiet and comfortable environment where you won’t be disturbed during the meditation. It could be a corner of your room, a favorite spot in nature, or any space where you feel at ease. Sit comfortably with your spine erect.

2. Begin with Deep Breaths: Take a few deep, cleansing breaths to relax your body and mind. Close your eyes to turn your focus inward.

3. Focus on the Chakra: Direct your attention to the specific chakra you want to work on. Visualize its location and imagine it as a spinning wheel of energy.

4. Chant the Bija Mantra: Using a calm and steady voice, repeat the corresponding Bija mantra for the chosen chakra. Feel the vibration of the sound resonating within that energy center.

5. Visualize the Color: Each chakra is associated with a specific color. As you chant the Bija mantra, visualize a vibrant light of that color filling and balancing the chakra.

6. Meditate and Absorb: Continue chanting for a few minutes, allowing the sound and visualization to harmonize the energy of the chakra.

7. Move Upwards: If you’re working on multiple chakras, repeat the process, moving from the root to the crown.

Reflect and Journal: After your meditation, take a moment to reflect on your experience. Consider journaling your thoughts, sensations, and any insights gained during the practice.

*Note* If you are going to work through and open all your seven chakras in one sitting, this is important to bear in mind:

A common mistake I see many people making when learning to work with Chakras is that they start to open their Chakras from bottom to top. Even some new age self-proclaimed “gurus” teach this false information.

The thing is that your lower, basic chakras get cluttered and “dirty” during your daily life, and therefore if you work with your chakras starting from your Muladhara (Root Chakra) you will pull up that “dirt” and clutter your upper chakras as well. To prevent this from happening, first, you will have to cleanse and rinse your chakras from top to bottom, and only then open them one by one from bottom to up.

First, take your favorite Asana (Āsana is a Sanskrit word meaning “sitting down, posture”) My usual posture is sitting cross-legged. Cross-legged sitting helps create a stable base for meditation. In your āsana, close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and relax. Start visualizing a bright light gathering like a radiating cloud above your head. If you can’t yet visualize the bright light with your mind’s eye, simply just try to feel it. In many cases, the feeling is more important than actually seeing it.

Inhale through your nose and focus your awareness on your Sahasrara Chakra. Then exhale and simultaneously vibrate the mantra: “AUM (OMM)”. Visualize the bright light coming down to your Ajna Chakra, like a waterfall, and simultaneously cleansing and relaxing your body. Focus your awareness on your Ajna Chakra. While you exhale, vibrate: “Agni Tanno Prachodayat” (“Agni (god of fire), bring me enlightenment”)… You are asking Agni to purify and baptize you by water and fire. Visualize and sense the bright energy light sweeping down through your body, cleansing your lower chakras one by one, and relaxing your body even more.

Now you can start fully opening your Chakras using Bija Mantras. Start from Muladhara and work your way up to Sahasrara. While opening each chakra and vibrating its “Bija”, try to visualize the chakra vibrating and cracking open like an egg, glowing and radiating its own color. Your Kundalini, the double helix spiral Serpent energy (Ida & Pingala), will travel up through your spine up to your Third Eye, sending energy through your whole body and being.
